The collection includes various aspects of public health in North Carolina beginning in the early 20th century.

Two series of slides, according to labels on the slides: series A and series C. Series A contains slides having to do with the history of healing and includes illustrations from ancient Greek, medieval, and Native American sources up through the 19th century. Series C contains slides having to do with nursing history, focusing on 19th to early 20th century.
"A New and Correct Map of the Province of North Carolina by Edward Moseley, late surveyor general of the said province 1733," showing settlements, inhabitants, soil conditions, rivers, and principal products, with insets showing "Port Brunswick or Cape Fear Harbour," "Port Beaufort or Topsail Inlet," "Ocacock (Ocracoke) Inlet," "Explanation," and "Directions for Ocacock (Ocracoke) Inlet". Imperial folio sheets, pasted on linen backing (probably in 18th century) with some insect damage and repairs, and some loss of information. Framed dimensions: 50-1/4" x 62-1/2". Scale: 1" = 5 miles. This collection consists of the family records, photographs, and genealogy records collected by Sarah Westray Bunn of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. She was an East Carolina Teachers' College 1936 graduate and served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1941 to 1966. Included are genealogy notes concerning the Lewis, Suggs, Speight, Powell, Harrison, and Exum families of Eastern N.C.; late 19th century and 20th Century photographs; correspondence (1905-1998); an 1847 book of children's poetry; clippings; genealogy charts; and a tombstone rubbing.
Memoir "Precious Memories. . .in My Life" by Wilson Crabtree (2006) about life experienced by the Crabtree and Oakley families in Rougemont, North Carolina, in Durham, Person, and Orange counties during the first half of the 20th Century. Family history and scanned photographs for the two families are given as well as documenting life in small diversified farms with tobacco as the cash crop. Accompanying the memoir is Mr. Crabtree's obituary.
This collection includes many letters written during the American Civil War by Dr. Charles James O'Hagan, an Irish immigrant who settled in Pitt County, North Carolina, and served in the North Carolina State Troops as a surgeon, to his daughters; and letters written by Confederate soldiers to his eldest daughter. Also included are letters (1840s) from family in Ireland and testamonials written to help Dr. O'Hagan find employment; letters written in the post-Civil War era 1860s through 1882; and letters, photographs, and obituaries concerning the related Laughinghouse and Grimes families of Pitt County, N.C., in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

These consist primarily of images of businesses, buildings, boats and ferries, mills, cemeteries and gravestones, architectural features of interest, churches, schools, people and historical houses.
